Specialist

A specialist is a member of an exchange who is responsible for facilitating the trading of a particular stock by holding an inventory of the stock, displaying the best bid and ask prices for their stock, managing limit orders and executing trades.

A specialist may manage large stock movements by buying or selling stocks out of their own inventory in order to meet market demand and reduce market volatility until the market levels out again. Typically each stock has a specialist who is responsible for ensuring an orderly and balanced market for their asset.
