10. Alan Howard


Alan Howard co-founded the Brevan Howard hedge fund in 2002. Fast forward 11 years and it now has over $35 billion under management, making it the single biggest hedge fund in Europe. With returns of 20.4 percent in 2008 and 18 percent in 2009, it’s hard not to sit up and take notice.

While Mr Howard has amassed a personal fortune of £1.5 billion, he has almost gained an interesting public profile — without really speaking to the media very often. Regularly topping rich lists and being branded in the Guardian as of the wealthiest hedge fund chiefs under the title of “Male, rich and Tory”, he isn’t viewed well amongst the general public.
